API strongly recommended — Kraken's native ledger endpoint is the most comprehensive in the industry, covering all activity types in a single call.
Log in to Kraken
Go to kraken.com and sign in.
Navigate to API settings
Go to Settings → Security → API.
Create a new API key
Click "Add Key". Give it a descriptive name like "Taxxy - read only".
Set the correct permissions
Enable: "Query Funds", "Query Ledger Entries", "Query Open Orders & Trades", "Query Closed Orders & Trades". Do NOT enable any "Modify" or "Withdraw" permissions.
Save and copy credentials
Save the key. Copy both the API Key and the Private Key. The Private Key is equivalent to a secret — store it securely. Paste both into Taxxy's Kraken connection form.

Kraken-specific notes
XBT, XXRP, XETH — Kraken asset name mappings
Kraken uses non-standard ticker names: BTC is XBT, ETH is XETH, XRP is XXRP, DOGE is XDG, LTC is XLTC, ETC is XETC, XMR is XXMR. Taxxy handles all these mappings automatically — you will see the standard names (BTC, ETH, etc.) in your Taxxy portfolio.
Ledger vs Trades export — always prefer Ledger
Kraken's Trades export only contains spot trade data. The Ledger export contains everything — trades, staking, deposits, withdrawals, OTC, and earn. Always use Ledger for a complete import.
Staking rewards in the ledger
Kraken is excellent at reporting staking rewards in its ledger. These appear as 'staking' type entries and Taxxy classifies them as income at FMV when received.

Does Taxxy handle Kraken's XBT ticker for Bitcoin?
Yes. Taxxy automatically maps Kraken's XBT to BTC, XXRP to XRP, XETH to ETH, and all other non-standard Kraken tickers to their canonical names.
Does Taxxy import Kraken staking rewards?
Yes. Kraken's ledger endpoint includes all staking reward entries. Taxxy imports these as income transactions at FMV when received, which is the correct tax treatment in most jurisdictions.
How far back does Kraken history go?
Kraken's API provides full account history since account creation. Unlike some exchanges with rolling windows, Kraken has no artificial history limit — Taxxy can import your complete history from day one.
Are Kraken Futures imported?
Yes. If you use Kraken Futures (separate from spot), those transactions are included in the Kraken ledger and will be imported by Taxxy.
